Seminar Announcement
Psy. 8-031. Seminar on Visual Perception
Instructors:: Gordon Legge and Dan Kersten

Our seminar this year will be broadly focused on cognitive neuroscience and should be appropriate for students with
a variety of backgrounds and interests.

There will be three components to the seminar:
* Readings from The New Cognitive Neurosciencesî edited by Gazzaniga.
* Phantoms in the Brainî by Ramachandran & Blakeslee.
* Articles by speakers in the Cognitive Neuroscience
Colloquium Series and, when possible, visits by the speakers to the seminar.

First Meeting: Fri., Sept8, 8:30-10:00, Elliott 204
Ken Nakayama (Harvard University), the first cognitive
neuroscience colloquium speaker, will probably attend
the first seminar on Sept. 8 to discuss his work with us.

In preparation, seminar attendees should read at least one of:
Kanwisher, N., Tong, F., & Nakayama, K. (1998). The effect
of face inversion on the human fusiform face area.
Cognition, 68(1), B1-11.
Tong, F., Nakayama, K., Vaughan, J. T., & Kanwisher, N. (1998).
Binocular rivalry and visual awareness in human extrastriate
cortex. Neuron, 21(4), 753-759.

Copies of these articles will be available during the first week of class in
the Center for Cognitive Sciences office.
Credits. The course is year-long with a total of 3 credits. Students should
sign up for one credit Fall Semester and 2 credits Spring Semester. It is
possible to take the seminar for one semester only, but we recommend year-long
attendance. The course ID number is 21461.If you need a Course Permission

Seminar members are expected to lead discussion of articles or chapters on a
rotating basis and to attend regularly and contribute to discussion.
We invite faculty and postdocs to attend the seminar.
