This section explains how to build pure Java programs using psychWithJava package and comand line tools. Make sure that you have installed java and psychWithJava package and configured your system.

• On any one of the three OSs, Linux, Mac OS X, or MS Windows, you can create and edit your java file with your preffered editor. If you want to use the classes available in psychWithJava you should include an import statement in your file. Include the following line among other import statements in your program

  import psychWithJava.*;

• Now you can use the classes in psychWithJava package and their methods. For example you can construct a FullScreen object and invoke one of its methods

  FullScreen fs = new FullScreen();

  fs.setNBuffers(2);

I will show how to compile and run java programs from command line with an example. Download HelloPsychophysicist.java and the auxilary image files psychophysik.png and fechner.png to your local disk.

• Compiling

  Open a terminal, or command window on MS Windows. Change to the directory where you downloaded the files. Type

  javac HelloPsychophysicist.java

  and press enter. If there were no errors you should have a file named HelloPsychophysicist.class in your directory.

• Running

  To execute the java program you just compiled, type

  java HelloPsychophysicist

  and press enter. Note that when you execute java programs you give only the name of the class without the .class extension.
